Are Hackathons Free? Registration Fees, Free Events and What to Check Before You Pay

Many hackathons are free but some charge ₹100 to ₹850 per person or team. See real 2026 examples of free and paid events, and what to verify on the official page before you pay a registration fee.

Many hackathons are free, but not all of them. In 2026, Hacktoberfest and ADA's GirlCode were free, while Hypnexis at Manipal University Jaipur charges ₹699 to ₹849 per team and GBT AI Ignite charged ₹109 to ₹149 per participant. The only safe answer is to read the fee line on each event's official page.

Free events with a stated fee policy

  • Hacktoberfest 2026. Free to take part. The official FAQ says almost all Fests, including Hack Days and Meetups, are free to attend, though certain pop-ups take place at ticketed conferences.
  • ADA GirlCode 2026. Its FAQ says the hackathon was completely free to participate in.
  • MUJ Hacks, Manipal University Jaipur. The Devfolio page for an earlier edition lists the registration cost as nothing.
  • Reskilll student hackathons. Reskilll states that all student hackathons on its platform are completely free to participate in. That is the platform's own claim, so still check each listing.

Events that charge

  • Hypnexis 2026, Manipal University Jaipur. Charged per team: ₹699 for MUJ students, ₹849 for other Indian students and USD 50 for international teams. Registration needs a valid transaction ID, and the fee must match your category.
  • GBT AI Ignite 2026. Listed on Unstop with fees per participant: ₹149 for a solo entrant, ₹129 each for a team of 2 and ₹109 each for teams of 3 to 5. Its registration deadline was 3 August 2026.

Costs that are not on the registration form

  • Travel and stay for offline rounds. Hypnexis's finalists compete in Jaipur, and its listing does not mention travel support.
  • Membership requirements. IEEEXtreme is for IEEE Student Members, with teams advised and proctored by an IEEE member, so entry depends on membership.
  • Certificates and extras. Check whether a certificate or kit costs extra.

What to verify before you pay

  1. Find the official page. Use the organiser's own site or its official Unstop, Devfolio or HackerEarth listing, not a repost.
  2. Read the fee line. Is it per person or per team, and does it depend on your college?
  3. Check the payment route. Pay through the platform checkout. Be wary of any request to send money to a personal account.
  4. Look for a refund policy. Many listings do not mention one.
  5. Count the offline costs. If a round is in another city, add travel and accommodation.
  6. Match the deadline. A paid registration that misses the cut-off helps no one.

Free versus paid is not a quality signal

The fee and the prize pool are unrelated in the examples above. Hypnexis charges a fee and advertises a ₹10 lakh pool, while Hacktoberfest is free. Compare eligibility, schedule, organiser and what finalists receive, then decide.
