SIH 2026 Eligibility: Who Can Apply and Team Rules

Who is eligible for Smart India Hackathon 2026: any stream, 6-member teams from one college with a mandatory female member, and the team rules.

SIH runs on a structure most students only half-understand until they're already inside it. Here's the actual sequence, eligibility rules, and where teams most commonly get stuck.

Who can apply

Every stream is eligible, not just CS or engineering. Management, civil, mechanical, biotech, and non-technical students can all form teams and compete, and SIH's own problem statements span far beyond software (hardware tracks exist alongside software ones). The one non-negotiable rule: a team must be entirely from one college. No mixing students across institutions, even for a strong idea.

The team rule that trips people up

Six members, including the team leader, with at least one female member mandatory. This isn't a soft guideline, it's checked. Plan your team composition around this from day one rather than scrambling to fill the slot right before the internal deadline.

The four stages, in order

This is a summary; the Smart India Hackathon guide walks through each round and what it involves.

  1. Internal hackathon at your own college. This is the actual filter. Every participating institution runs its own selection round first, and this is where most teams are eliminated, long before the national portal even sees a submission.
  2. Idea submission. Teams that clear the internal round submit a written proposal for national-level review. No code yet: this stage is about problem understanding and feasibility on paper.
  3. Shortlisting. Reviewers score submissions on problem understanding, originality, feasibility, and how complete the write-up is. Your college's SPOC handles the actual submission: logging into sih.gov.in and entering up to 30 teams (25 shortlisted, 5 waitlisted) from the institution.
  4. Grand finale. Shortlisted teams build, refine, and present live at a nodal centre over multiple days, with mentor guidance throughout and judging from domain experts at the end.

What actually decides who advances at the internal round

Since the internal hackathon is the real bottleneck, treat it with the same seriousness as the national round. Colleges vary in how they run it: some replicate the national format closely (written proposal, then a build), others run a lighter single-day filter. Ask your SIH nodal officer or SPOC early for your specific college's process rather than assuming it matches what you've read generically online.

Where prize money and rewards fit in

SIH is government-run (AICTE and the Ministry of Education's Innovation Cell), so compare it to a corporate hackathon on different terms. Cash prizes are smaller than something like Flipkart GRiD, but past cycles have included AC-3 tier train fare reimbursement to the finale and a modest daily allowance for shortlisted teams during the build phase. Confirm exact terms for the current cycle on sih.gov.in, since these are set fresh each year.
